To assess the Subpod classic we looked at 22 owner reports across Reddit and blogs from Jan 2022 to March 2025, excluding some posts that seem unduly influenced by affiliate commissions.
This in-ground worm composter has its fans and detractors. Detractors are shocked at the price for what is essentially a worm box half buried in ground. (I’ve personally also thought the same, which is why I experimented with making my own Subpod alternative for a fraction of the price - see article below for details).
Some users also noted issues with lid hinges and the lid-stay. One owner noted that the lid snapped in heavy winds, and so did the free replacement.
The SubPod performed better when it came to rodent proofing, with only one report of mouse entering the box, and that only after ground movement warped the lid. Users did complain about insects like ants, but this is an issue with many compost systems. (If it is indeed an issue - ants do, after all, help break down organic material.)
Some users noted that worm colonies died in winter, with a cold frame being used to successfully protect worms in one example.
The Subpod is not currently available new, but may be available second hand.
