To assess the Hungry Bin, we looked at reports from 40 users across forums, comments, articles, blog posts and Reddit.
Like the Urban Worm Bag, the Hungry Bin has its share of devoted owners. One has found it has performed reliably for a decade (with the only con being the price), while a convert from a Worm Factory 360 noted 'It's not perfect but it's my favorite so far.' BBC Gardeners’ World gave it a very respectable 4.3/5 - although only 3/5 for value for money, calling it 'the largest and most expensive wormery'.
One claim that is challenged is how much waste can be dealt with. The manufacturer states 2 kg can be put through a day, while one owner who has been running the bin for 6 years estimates it at more like 500 grams.
Users were divided on ventilation. Several owners argued that ventilation was insufficient. This may also be linked to another issue we found reported - overly wet castings. However, others argued that the minimal-air design is deliberate, as it keeps worms in the top layer. A second known issue is compacted or ‘clumpy’ castings.
The Hungry Bin is designed to be rat proof, with a sealed lid and off-ground steel frame. It seems to work - after looking at 12 years of reports, we couldn’t find a single report of a rodent infestation.
