To assess the Tumbleweed Can-O-Worms, we looked at reports from 30 users across blogs, forums, articles, letters, comments and reviews spanning from 2007 to 2025. However, many of the available comments focus on the discontinued 3-tray original rather than the latest model.
Developed by RELN in the early 1990s, the Can-O-Worms won the 1996 Australian Design Award. That said, the early design did have some flaws, with legs buckling and bowing when the bin is full. Some owners remove them and replace them with bricks - a fix which is recommended by Santa Cruz County's official guide. The current two level kit seems to be better although it can leak around the legs.
The sump and tap need to be cleaned monthly to avoid blockage - which can in turn lead to leachate backing up and killing worms. Users reported a variety of effective fixes for this: leaving the tap permanently open over a container, filling the bottom with shredded cardboard, or placing fabric or weed-cloth between the base and the bottom tray.
The original instructions recommended flushing the bin every week with water, but two reports indicated this caused problems with waterlogging.
No worm bin is suitable for high temperatures, but one user complained that the use of black plastic and small air holes caused excessive heat in temperatures above 40C-plus, leading to the death of many worms. To be fair, though, 40C is likely to kill worms in many worm bins.
The manufacturer claims that the bin can handle 3-4 kg of waste, but some users thought this was an exaggeration. The round trays gathered mixed feedback - there are no corners to trap food, but they are awkward to cut paper covers for.
We found no reports of any rodents getting into the bin across any of the 30 reports we scanned.
