We assessed the Lifetime 80-Gallon Compost Tumbler based on 22 user reports made between 2011 and 2025.
Perhaps not surprisingly to people familiar with tumblers, the biggest issue is the assembly - described by one user as "a nightmare... [which took] several frustrating hours". The instructions themselves demand two adults and a drill. However, this seems to be a universal challenge with tumblers rather than something to hold against this particular model.
The durability of this US-made tumbler is good, but not perfect. The panels last well but the hinges can rust - still, several users reported that the tumbler was still going strong 6-7 years after purchase. Some users utilise penetrating oil to protect the device - if you do need replacement hinges, these have been provided free of charge by the manufacturer.
Some users have reported moisture in the drum, including "baseball-sized mudballs" when the tumbler has not been managed well, as well as moisture inside the double-wall panels, leading one owner to drill holes in the panels. Meanwhile the lack of insulation makes it harder to achieve high temperatures than the insulated Jora.
There were no reports of issues with rodents getting into the composter, and indeed the tumbler won praise for being rodent-proof. While some owners have had issues, many long-term owners are very happy with the tumbler, with one saying "I've loved it... I REALLY wish I could find another one." If you are happy to put the effort into putting it together, can find one (it’s currently on backorder) and are prepared to put a little care into maintaining it, this could be a good long-term bet.
