We assessed the FCMP Outdoor IM4000 based on 40 user reports from 2013-2025 spanning Reddit, blogs and YouTube videos, excluding reports which seemed overly biased by affiliate commissions.

Let’s get the worst out of the way first, and if you’ve read our other tumbler reviews you won’t be surprised to hear it’s… the construction. 12 users complained this was hard (compared to 3 who said it was easy, but they’re probably engineers to whom tumblers are child’s play!) The fix actually seems to be ensuring you have the right equipment - with a Robertson/square driver and 10mm socket some more handy users were able to put it together in 35 minutes.

Despite the construction, the majority of users were delighted with this Canadian-made tumbler. It turns well when well managed (although gets heavy when full) and users reported getting compost in 4-5 weeks. (The manufacturer claims two weeks, which is ambitious, and as always remember just because it looks like finished compost doesn’t mean it is finished - mature before use.)

The build appears solid, with one mentioning the IM4000 was still going strong after four years of use. And customer service proved to be impressive - when one user reported a cracked lid caused by user error (hitting the tumbler with a hammer to get rid of ice), the manufacturer still sent out a replacement lid free of charge.

We couldn’t find a single report of rodents getting into the tumbler, with one user reporting it “critter-proof” after ten years of use. It also kept out raccoons, stray cats and dogs.

Not every report was positive. One user complained it was junk compared to the Joraform, while other complaints included "wet, gloppy messes", a winter ice-block and leachate draining from the panel seams. Users also complained about the small size of the sliding doors, which made retrieval of compost difficult.
