To assess the Aerobin 400, we looked at over 30 reports across Reddit, GardenDrum comments and owner blogs spanning 13 years.
Consensus was hard to find on this bin when it came to construction. Many long term owners reported that the bins were still effective after 8-16 years of use, while others called the construction flimsy.
Many users commented that the bin reliably stopped rats, raccoons and dogs from entering above. However, to be completely rodent proof it needs to be placed on a concrete slab. (Some users noted mice burrowing in from the bottom when placed on earth.)
The bin requires some management, as users report that the contents can compact or dry out without active management. Users report that the bin is capable of hot composting, with temperatures reaching 60C (140F), although do note that you can achieve hot composting with pretty much any set up if conditions are right. That said, some owners in cooler climates complained about getting slower results than with open bins.
Odor was not an issue when the bin was managed correctly.
Some users complain about the leachate tank, saying the spigot was too low and can clog or seize over time and that it doesn’t yield much.
A number of users complained about the price, suggesting that composters should wait till the bin was on sale before buying it.
