It’s cheap. It’s cheerful. And it comes in a lot of plastic.

The Navaris Hanging Waste Bins won’t win design awards, it’s not particularly eco-friendly and it needs daily emptying. However, you do get two bins for the price of less than a third of some fancier bins — and they hang over a cabinet door, taking up zero counter space — so if you’re on a budget it’s worth considering.

These cheerful bins hang over your cabinet door taking up zero counter space, and as long as you don't mind regular (we mean daily!) emptying, they're a great choice for the budget-conscious composter.

Design and usage

My first impressions were — this comes in a lot of plastic. As it’s made from plastic, that felt a bit unnecessary.

Navaris wrapped in plastic.

After unwrapping it looked utilitarian. The colors are a little muted, and it’s not a fancy simplehuman compost bin, but it is very functional. You slip it over a cabinet door where it holds scraps and is easily removed.

(One caveat: it fits doors up to 2cm thick and won’t work on doors with knobs or round handles. That wasn’t a problem for us, but it’s worth checking your cabinets before you buy.)

It’s dishwasher friendly but it also wipes down easily, with no grooves or hidden corners to trap food.

It’s also exceedingly good value — even before you consider you get two bins in one package.

It’s true that there’s no filter, or even a cover. This is clearly designed for capturing food scraps as you cook, and you’ll need speedy disposal (well, next day, as you clear up the wine glasses!) for anything caught here. But on the other hand, it’s convenient for capturing scraps because of the open aperture. (If that aperture was a little wider, it would be even better.)

One thing to flag on capacity: at 3.8L each, these work well for a couple or a family that cooks lightly — but we’re a household of three to four (depending on whether the eldest is back from college!) and we cook a lot, so we found them a little on the small side.

Using both Navaris bins together helps, but if your household generates a lot of vegetable scraps, you’ll be likely find these aren’t sufficient.

It doesn’t come with a handle, but it’s very light, which is handy for trips to the compost bin if you have one. It can also be swapped with its partner so you can have one in use and one in the dishwasher.

Verdict

Not everyone wants to spend a fortune on a designer bin. If you’re looking for something cheap and functional, this does the job.

One caveat: the return rate on Amazon is higher than we’d like, and for that reason alone we’re holding off from adding it to our list of recommended kitchen bins for now.

Bottom Line: The Navaris delivers exactly what it promises — a no-fuss, budget-friendly hanging bin that takes up zero counter space and is a breeze to clean.

The open top means odor control is non-existent, and capacity may frustrate larger households who cook frequently.
